Conference 2017: The cost of breaking an artist

December 16 2016

The Cost of Breaking an Artist

The proportion of profits ploughed into A&R is still higher than the equivalent used in research and development in some other sectors: 16.9% in music, 14.4% in medical and biotechnology. The typical cost of ‘breaking’ a worldwide-signed artist in large markets like the USA or UK is between $500,000 and $2 million. This panel aims to find out what exactly these figures consist of, which A&R expenses need to be prioritised, and answer the million-dollar question: is it worth it?
