Hate Speech or Free Speech: When do we pull the plug?

About

Presented by by:Larm

Free speech is a right that all artists and performers in public expect. But equally, that right comes with the expectation that artists will use it responsibility. In the heat of the moment on stage, what is to stop words coming out of an artist’s mouth that end up insulting a member of the audience, or inflaming hatred against a minority group?

How can one balance the public’s right to enjoy live music in an atmosphere free from bullying, harassment or discrimination, against the artist’s right to self expression and role as provocateur? These are awkward questions with legal and moral implications, in an era where we are becoming increasingly sensitive to the need for inclusivity, anti-racism and gender neutrality. What is the legal position - can moral questions be fixed by a contract? Should musicians - often the targets of online hate themselves - be expected to love everyone in the room? And how can pre-agreed codes of conduct be enforced in the real world? This panel aims to discuss the issues openly and take a constructive approach to finding solutions.
