Joanna Perez Nordahl is a Swedish/Brazilian award-winning film director and artist based in London. Her music videos, short films, documentaries and commercials, as well as concert visuals and live performances for the stage, have garnered her international recognition both as a director and visual artist. She has made music videos for Four Tet, Ashnikko and Tove Styrke, worked with outlets such as Vogue, Billboard, Pitchfork, L’Officiel Paris and Stereogum, as well as companies like WhatsApp and RFSU.
She has also won a series of awards, having been shortlisted for the UKMVAs twice, as well as for five Swedish Grammys for music video director of the year. She won the grand price in 2016, beating her own video in the same category. Films and music videos that Nordahl has written and directed won the DJ Mag Best of British in 2020, two times Guldägget film of the year and a global 12th ranking at the Sabre Awards out of 20 000 entries.
In this conversation with journalist Shaad D’Souza, Joanna will take us through how she operates as a director while showing some selected cuts of both her own work and key inspirations.
