Stephanie Phillips has already made her mark in the British music scene as the guitarist for the acclaimed punk band Big Joanie, but with her debut non-fiction book Why Solange Matters, Phillips is also shaping the future for music journalism.

In the book, Phillips chronicles the story of how Solange Knowles emerged from the shadow of her superstar sister Beyoncé, struggling on beyond a rigid and discriminatory music industry to emerge as a pivotal musician and artist in her own right, and a beloved voice for the Black Lives Matter generation. Phillips also draws parallels between Solange’s story and her own, attempting to stake out a course for Black womanhood within the music industry of the 21st century.

Since its publication in May, Why Solange Matters has received critical acclaim across the board. The Guardian named it “a hymn to Black individualism”, while The Wire lauded it as “a rich portrait of Black artistry as abundance”. With her book, Stephanie Phillips cements her position as a force to be reckoned with in modern music journalism, and at by:Larm 2021 you will get the chance to hear her experiences directly.
